Elfriede Jelinek (Vienna)
Abstract In this essay I consider the figure of Ripley, the character played by
Sigourney Weaver in the "Alien" film series, in a threefold sense: (i) in terms
of her status as woman, (ii) as she relates to the monsters against which she
struggles, and (iii) as a 'body' under industrial capitalism - in a comparison
between "Metropolis," "Alien" and their political subtexts.
